Boundaries in Avela are a representation of a geographic area in the world. They are represented by GeoJSON files. Boundaries are primarily used for restriction choices for a parent to a set of schools within a boundary.
To get started, you first need to add boundaries. Once boundaries are added for a specific enrollment period, you can customize forms in that enrollment period to use those boundaries to change school selection for parents.
Adding boundaries
Boundaries are currently unable to be edited by admins.
To customize your boundaries, reach out to your Avela contact with the following information:
- A GeoJSON boundary file, representing the different boundaries within your district.
- A connections JSON file describing the relationship between the boundaries in the GeoJSON file and the schools within your district. Customizing school selection with boundaries
Any address question type in a form can have location boundaries activated for it. The address entered for this question will change the shown schools based on uploaded boundaries and connections.
There are two options for how the entered address affects the school selection list:
- Only show schools with boundaries will limit the schools in the school selection list to schools that are within the same boundary as the entered address. This is most helpful if you'd like to only show schools in the parents neighborhood as selection option.
- Show schools within boundaries at the top of the list will order the schools that are within the same boundary as the entered address above all other schools in the school selection list. This is helpful if you still want to allow parents to choose schools outside their boundary, but promote the schools closer to them.
| ⚠️ The location boundaries option can only be turned on for one address question type in any form. The question must come before the school selection section. Address questions after the school selection section will not have this option. |
