Form tags vs. subform tags
There are two levels of tags in Avela: Form tags and sub-form tags.
Form tags are applied to the entire form entry. These tags do not change regardless of what schools the parents selects when filling in forms.
Sub-form tags are applied to specific schools selected as part of a form. These tags remain with the selected school even if the parent changes school selections.
The documentation below will specify when functionality or behavior changes when dealing with form tags vs. sub-form tags.
Creating tags
Creating tags can be done in the same way tags are added. To create a new tag, click the “New tag” button wherever you see it, either applying tags in bulk or individually.
If you don't see the button positioned as in the screenshot below, you may not have permissions to create new tags. Check with your organization administrator or reach out to Avela for help.
You can also create a tag by looking for it - if it doesn't exist, you'll be able to create it!
Filtering by tags
You can filter by tags in any form list view.
- Select the “Filter” button next to the search bar
- Scroll down to find the tags you want to filter by - either form tags or sub-form tags - and select the tags you want to filter by

Tag groups
Tag groups bundle related tags together, making them easier to organize and giving you control over how they're displayed. Each tag can belong to only one tag group. For example, an urgent tag can't appear in two different groups at once.
Tag groups aren't enabled for everyone. If your organization hasn't enabled them, you'll see a simpler interface without any tag group options.
Creating new tag groups
If you have the right permissions, you can create a new tag group through the bulk selection menu in any form detail list:
- Select one or more entries in the form list
- Select Tag
- From here, you can view existing tag groups or add a new one
Tag group settings
To change a tag group's settings, follow the same steps as creating a new tag group, but click Edit on an existing tag group instead of adding a new one.
Edit options include renaming the tag group, setting the tag group to be visible to parents, and limiting the number of tags allowed in that tag group. You can also delete the tag group. Deleting a tag group will remove all of the tags within it.
Be careful to limit the amount of visible tags that can be applied on a form so as not to overwhelm families.
Tag permissions
Tags and tag groups are subject to permissions. Depending on yours, you may be unable to create tag groups, create tags within a group, or apply tags at all. If you're missing a permission you need, reach out to your organization administrator or an Avela representative for help.
