Form tags vs. subform tags
There are two levels of tags in Avela: Form tags and sub-form tags.
Form tags are applied to the entire form entry. These tags do not change regardless of what schools the parents selects when filling in forms.
Sub-form tags are applied to specific schools selected as part of a form. These tags remain with the selected school even if the parent changes school selections.
The documentation below will specify when functionality or behavior changes when dealing with form tags vs. sub-form tags.
Creating tags
Creating tags can be done in the same way tags are added. To create a new tag, click the “New tag” button wherever you see it, either applying tags in bulk or individually.
If you don't see the button positioned as in the screenshot below, you may not have permissions to create new tags. Check with your organization administrator or reach out to Avela for help.
You can also create a tag by looking for it - if it doesn't exist, you'll be ble to create it!
Filtering by tags
You can filter by tags in any form list view.
- Select the “Filter” button next to the search bar
- Scroll down to find the tags you want to filter by - either form tags or sub-form tags - and select the tags you want to filter by

Tag groups
Tags groups collect tags together to help organize them or configure how those tags are displayed. Tags can only be part of a single tag group. You cannot, for example, have an urgent tag present in more than one tag group.
Tag groups are not universally enabled. Some organizations may not have them activated. If so, you’ll see a simpler interface without any tag groups available.
Creating new tag groups
Creating new tag groups, if you have the permissions to do so, can be done via bulk selection mechanism in any form detail list.
- Select any number of entries in the form list
- Select “More” in the bulk menu selection banner
- Select “Tag”
- You will be able to see existing tag groups and, if you desire, add a new tag group.
Tag group settings
To change tag group settings, you can follow the same steps are creating a new tag group. However, instead of creating the new tag group, you can click “Edit” on any existing tag group.
The modal that appears allows you to change the function of a tag group.
Those options include renaming the tag group, setting the tag group to be visible to parents, and limiting the number of tags allowed in that tag group. You can also delete the tag group, if you desire. Deleting a tag group will remove all of the tags within it.
When multiple tag groups are visible to parents, any tags added to any of the visible tag groups will be visible to parents. This is why limiting the amount of tags that can be applied on a form can be useful - so as to not overwhelm families.
Tag permissions
Tags and tag groups are subject to permissions. You may find that you are unable to create tag groups, or tags within a tag group, as well as be unable to apply tags whatsoever.
If you do not have permissions, reach out to an Organization administrator or an Avela representative for help.
